Scientists have found that certain links may exist between different autoimmune disorders, allowing research on one disease to shed light on another. One such potential link, between type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis, led to a three-way partnership between Axxam S.p.A. – a biotechnology company based in Italy that conducts early-stage research for life sciences – JDRF, and Fast Forward, LLC – a wholly owned subsidiary of the National MS Society devoted to fast-tracking commercial drug development. Formed in 2009, the goal of the partnership was to develop potential new treatments for the two autoimmune diseases. Now, the three organizations are renewing their partnership to fund further research and development.

During Q2-Q3 2011, Adienne Pharma & Biotech S.r.l. – an Italian company, based in Bergamo, dedicated to the treatment of rare and severe diseases – has been granted by both EPO and USPTO of a patent for its molecule Mubodina®.
The European Patent Office granted the patent “Antibodies Anti-C5 component of the Complement System and their use” (1.529.063 B1) the last 20th April and United States Patent and Trademark Office granted the patent “Anti-C5 alpha antibodies” (7.999.081 B2) the last 16th August.

Genovax, a start up company based at the BioIndustry Park “Silvano Fumero” in Ivrea (Turin) developing vaccines for autoimmune diseases and cancer, recently has announced that the recruitment of the planned 10 patients has been completed for the ongoing Phase I/II clinical study in patients affected by advanced prostate cancer.
Genovax’ GX301 is a peptides vaccination targeting telomerase, with the aim of stopping cancer cells proliferation. The company received in December 2009 the regulatory approval to start a Phase I/II clinical study in advanced renal and prostate cancers.

MolMed S.p.A. (Milan:MLM) – biotechnology company focused on research, development and clinical validation of novel antitumour therapies – recently announced the expansion in the United States of a pivotal Phase III trial of its investigational anticancer drug NGR-hTNF in malignant pleural mesothelioma, with treatment of the first patient at one of the most prestigious US Universities in New York. The trial is already ongoing in in Europe and plans to involve more than 40 centres worldwide. Results from the trial are expected in 2013. The start of Phase III in the US follows IND clearance from the FDA.
