Eurand Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a subsidiary of global specialty pharmaceutical company Eurand N.V. – with specialty manufacturing facilities in Milan-San Giuliano and an R&D facility in Milan-Pessano con Bornago – announced additional data from a post-hoc analysis of a Phase III clinical trial with ZENPEP (pancrelipase) Delayed-Release Capsules, an FDA-approved pancreatic enzyme product (PEP) for the treatment of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) or other conditions. The data were presented at the 24th Annual North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference in Baltimore, Md.

DSM BioSolutions, a multinational company with a large production site located in Italy (Capua), and PolyTherics Limited, an innovator in precision engineering of proteins, announced that they have entered into an agreement for the process development and manufacture of PolyTherics’ lead biobetter product, HiPEG IFN a-2a.
PolyTherics has applied its HiPEG™ site-specific PEGylation technology to interferon alpha to produce a product (HiPEG™ IFN a-2a) that has eight-fold higher activity than a marketed PEGylated interferon in vitro and a comparable half-life in a preclinical study. HiPEG™ specifically attaches poly(ethylene) glycol (PEG) to a histidine tag at the end of the protein; histidine tags are commonly used to improve protein stability and to facilitate the purification of proteins.

MolMed S.p.A. – biotechnology company focused on research, development and clinical validation of novel antitumour therapies, headquartered at the San Raffaele Biomedical Science Park in Milan, Italy – announced the enrolment of the first patient in a randomised Phase II trial (NGR016) of its investigational anticancer drug NGR-hTNF for the treatment of soft tissue sarcomas (STS).
The trial, expecting to enrol 96 patients, will investigate the administration of NGR-hTNF either as single agent or in combination with doxorubicin.
