Scientific and technological parks - STPs

Scientific and technological parks (STPs) are playing an increasingly important role in the development of biotechnology, especially in a very delicate phase like that of technology transfer, i.e. when the results of scientific research take the road of some industrial applicability.
The location at a business incubator or in a science park is often the only opportunity for the birth and growth to a business in the biotech sector for a number of reasons, among which the availability of financial instruments and the need to deal with a global market. In this sense, the STPs, beyond the location offer, are able to give concrete answers also through the attraction of seed financing necessary to support the activities of the new businesses in their first years of life and allowing access, right from beginning, to a national and international network of professionals.

In this mediating role in technology transfer activities, the STPs have a privileged position in the monitoring of what is happening in the world of large and small biotech companies, and thus represent a wealth of experience and information useful when there are problems to be faced, common to companies active in research and development of new biotechnology product.
Therefore, the network of Italian parks plays a fundamental role in the creation of innovation and is an important reference point for the development of industries in the biotechnology sector.
In Italy, the main biotech parks are concentrated in the North: in Lombardy there are the Insubrias Biopark Gerenzano and the Parco Tecnologico Padano in Lodi, being the former active in bio-medical field, the latter in the so-called “green area”, dealing with dairy products and genetic innovations for the breeding of animal species. In Piedmont, in the area of Ivrea, is located the BioIndustry Park Silvano Fumero. In the Northeast, finally, there is the Area Science Park of Trieste and the Scientific and Technological Park of Venice.

Significant is also the presence of STPs in other parts of Italy, including Tuscany, where the Toscana Life Sciences operates, Campania, where is located Technapoli, the park that houses the TIGEM - Telethon Institute of Genetics and Medicine, Sicily with the Scientific and Technological Park of Sicily and Sardinia, with Sardegna Ricerche.
